Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) Registration Information

We have had an amazing first year of Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) in Cooperstown, and we are excited to begin planning for fall 2026 – our second year offering this program. This year’s UPK program has been a wonderful success, providing children with a strong start to school through a high-quality, play-based learning environment. We are thrilled with the growth we have seen in our students socially, emotionally, and academically, and we are grateful for the partnership and support from our UPK families.

Cooperstown Central School District offers Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) for eligible children residing within the district. This program provides a developmentally appropriate educational experience designed to support our youngest learners as they prepare for kindergarten and beyond.

UPK Eligibility

To be eligible for the UPK program, children must:

  • Reside within the Cooperstown Central School District, and
  • Turn 4 years old on or before December 1, 2026.

UPK Program Details

  • The program will run five days a week during regular school hours, following the district calendar.
  • The class will be led by a certified teacher with the support of a teacher aide.
  • The curriculum will emphasize early literacy, numeracy, social-emotional development, motor skills, and learning through play and hands-on activities.
  • Parent transportation to and from school is required.
  • Free breakfast and lunch will be available through the school meals program.

UPK Lottery Process

As required by the New York State Department of Education, enrollment in the UPK program will be determined by lottery. The district will open one classroom, with a maximum enrollment of 18 students.

Submitting an application form indicates interest in the program but does not guarantee enrollment. Families are welcome to attend the lottery drawing and will be notified in writing of their status once the application window closes. Families unable to attend the lottery drawing in person are encouraged to attend virtually through the Zoom meeting. Click the Zoom link below to access the virtual meeting.
